How to choose a big bike mechanic in Phuket
Phuket is full of scooters and the mechanics who fix them — but a big bike is a different animal. Torque specs, valve clearances, CAN-bus electrics, suspension that costs more than a scooter: a wrong guess gets expensive fast. Riders here trade the same horror stories: a simple job that took three weeks, a bill that doubled after the work, parts that came back suspiciously different.
You don't need luck to avoid that. You need a checklist.
1. Diagnosis before any number
A serious workshop wants to see the bike before naming a price. A phone quote for "engine noise" is a guess, and you will pay for the difference either way. The good sign: the mechanic asks questions — when it started, what changed, what fuel, what sounds — then checks before promising anything.
2. A clear price before the wrench turns
The rule that saves holidays: price first, work second. An honest shop tells you what the job costs, what parts it needs and what happens if they open it up and find more. If extra work appears, you get a call, not a bigger bill.
3. You can watch the work

4. Parts you can trace

Any shop can collect five stars. Look for repeated specifics: the same praise («fixed what others couldn't», «honest about price», «open late») showing up across months and languages is signal, not luck. One angry review among fifty is a Tuesday; the same complaint five times is a diagnosis.
